Chapter Eleven

“Patsy, my dear!” Marcello stretched one hand out toward Connor’s stepmother as she emerged from the sunroom. He descended the last few steps and approached her, thinking how reminiscent of a bantam rooster she was in her flowing red caftan. “Where is your charming son, eh? We are supposed to meet with Mr. Crawford this afternoon, and I have lost the dear boy.”

Patsy’s face opened up when she saw him, and she took his hand in hers. “Why, Marcello, I don’t know. I had breakfast with him this morning, as usual, but he left for town right afterward. I believe he had a fax to send, but he should have been back by now.”

“Ah, a fax.” Marcello scowled and shook his head, hoping the fax story was a lie and instead Connor had gone off somewhere with the pretty Signorina Anne. “You should talk to that boy, Patsy. He struggles too much and for what? He needs to learn how to relax.”

Patsy wagged a finger at him. “He’s a very important man now, Marcello, with important responsibilities. We mustn’t keep thinking of him as a boy.”

Marcello waved her words away. “To me, he will always be a boy. Except perhaps today, when he will be a tough businessman.” He laughed, wishing Patsy would fall off her high horse once and for all. As far as he was concerned the woman didn’t know how to enjoy life.

“Connor is always a tough businessman. That’s why it’s such a shame he left his job at Emory Enterprises. He was a natural. Such a success, everyone said so. And so in demand. He was always invited to all the most important functions, and he frequently took me along, you know.” She laughed lightly. “Yes, I was getting quite well known in the media. Those society columns just can’t get enough of the Emorys, it seems.”

“Ah, sí, one never knows what the papers will find interesting, eh?” Marcello gave her a sidelong glance.

“They never get tired of the rich and famous, I’ll tell you that.” Patsy sighed with the burden. “But now that Connor’s left Emory, I wonder if they’ll still find him interesting. Such a shame, as I said. He was getting to be quite the celebrity. The most eligible bachelor in town, you know. By far.” Her brow furrowed. “He hasn’t said anything to you, has he, about why he left the job?”

“To me?” Marcello drew his head back and placed his fingers on his chest as if the idea were preposterous. “What would he say to me?”

Patsy pursed her lips. “I suppose you’re right. If he wouldn’t tell me, what would he say to you? I try and try to talk to him about it, but whenever I ask why he quit he only says, ‘It was time.’” She shook her head, obviously annoyed. “Time for what, is what I’d like to know. Failure?”

“Pah! That boy couldn’t fail if he tried to. He simply needed to be his own man. To do something without the family crest on it.
