Chapter Eleven
âPatsy, my dear!â Marcello stretched one hand out toward Connorâs stepmother as she emerged from the sunroom. He descended the last few steps and approached her, thinking how reminiscent of a bantam rooster she was in her flowing red caftan. âWhere is your charming son, eh? We are supposed to meet with Mr. Crawford this afternoon, and I have lost the dear boy.â
Patsyâs face opened up when she saw him, and she took his hand in hers. âWhy, Marcello, I donât know. I had breakfast with him this morning, as usual, but he left for town right afterward. I believe he had a fax to send, but he should have been back by now.â
âAh, a fax.â Marcello scowled and shook his head, hoping the fax story was a lie and instead Connor had gone off somewhere with the pretty Signorina Anne. âYou should talk to that boy, Patsy. He struggles too much and for what? He needs to learn how to relax.â
Patsy wagged a finger at him. âHeâs a very important man now, Marcello, with important responsibilities. We mustnât keep thinking of him as a boy.â
Marcello waved her words away. âTo me, he will always be a boy. Except perhaps today, when he will be a tough businessman.â He laughed, wishing Patsy would fall off her high horse once and for all. As far as he was concerned the woman didnât know how to enjoy life.
âConnor is always a tough businessman. Thatâs why itâs such a shame he left his job at Emory Enterprises. He was a natural. Such a success, everyone said so. And so in demand. He was always invited to all the most important functions, and he frequently took me along, you know.â She laughed lightly. âYes, I was getting quite well known in the media. Those society columns just canât get enough of the Emorys, it seems.â
âAh, sÃ, one never knows what the papers will find interesting, eh?â Marcello gave her a sidelong glance.
âThey never get tired of the rich and famous, Iâll tell you that.â Patsy sighed with the burden. âBut now that Connorâs left Emory, I wonder if theyâll still find him interesting. Such a shame, as I said. He was getting to be quite the celebrity. The most eligible bachelor in town, you know. By far.â Her brow furrowed. âHe hasnât said anything to you, has he, about why he left the job?â
âTo me?â Marcello drew his head back and placed his fingers on his chest as if the idea were preposterous. âWhat would he say to me?â
Patsy pursed her lips. âI suppose youâre right. If he wouldnât tell me, what would he say to you? I try and try to talk to him about it, but whenever I ask why he quit he only says, âIt was time.ââ She shook her head, obviously annoyed. âTime for what, is what Iâd like to know. Failure?â
âPah! That boy couldnât fail if he tried to. He simply needed to be his own man. To do something without the family crest on it.
